Fish Oils
We recommend fish oils for the majority of our patients.
There is an increasing body of literature documenting the positive
health effects fish oils provide. This
isn’t your grandmother’s cod liver oil that tasted so awful!
Yet, your grandmother was really ahead of the times, because she knew
that people who take fish oils are generally healthier and less susceptible to
every infection going around the community. It is good to eat cold water fish several times per
week but
unfortunately this will not give you enough of the omega 3 essential fatty acids
(the right kind of fish oils) that are the key to better health. Eating too much fish is also a concern due to the potential
high levels of mercury and other toxins such as insecticides and PCB’s. Highly purified pharmaceutical grade essential fatty acids (EFA’s) are
what you want to take to avoid these pollutants.
Fish oils have been effective in helping many patients
with both physical and mental conditions. There
are research studies showing benefits from fish oils in Crohn’s disease,
rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, coronary artery
disease, bipolar disorders, depression, and ADHD to name a few. Theoretically,
there is almost no condition that EFA’s would not help. Thus we urge the use of omega 3 EFA’s as a cornerstone of our healthy
aging program.
How do omega 3 essential fatty acids work?
On a molecular level, they help maintain a healthy balance of another
group of hormones in your body - the eicosanoids - which are critical to
controlling inflammation, blood flow, and blood clotting. Too many people are out of “eicosanoid balance” with the result being
an epidemic of atherosclerotic (heart) and degenerative diseases. Along with key changes to your diet to control insulin levels, the use of
fish oils helps you regain your “eicosanoid
balance” and enjoy a healthier and more productive life.
